Love the Earth and Sun

Walt Whitman Jr.“This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body…”

Walt Whitman

I received this quote from an American friend living in Denmark who is a fanatic of Walt Whitman Jr. – Me too.. a fanatic of the message of life.

  1. I do think that it is a nice piece and it really talks to the mind and to the body! of course as there is (there should be) no difference?! and at the same time it put in evidence of far we have been from anything of “real importance”………is it there anything which really matter?…….understand we should just be and feel the life…..and the wind (often too cold, but who cares?!it should not be important) and than feel the slow motion in our mind and in our body…….the slower we go the faster we get to what we want!

  2. Yeah…! Thank you Anna. You allways give me a sweet smile on my lips – you are so alive. Hope to see you soon! 🙂

  3. Thanks for keeping this, I often reference this page for people needing inspiration because I don’t think it gets any better that this!

    Thanks so much for posting!

  4. Thanks for posting the Whitman poem and photo (I used your post to cross reference the wording), planning to carve part of the text into stone, “Love the earth and sun and the animals”

I am actually quite taken with the photo of Walt as well – would love to see a character such as him walking down my street.

    Best,

    Adam
